Tech Tip: Install Harmonic Balancer

Do Not Do This

Fig. 44.6

When installing a Harmonic Balancer DO NOT USE A HAMMER as shown in Fig. 44.6 this can damage the Elastomer Ring between the hub and outer inertia ring causing the ring and hub to separate. If they start to separate some bad things can happen, the ring can rotate on the hub making it impossible to time the engine correctly, the ring can move backward and eat a hole in the timing chain cover, or it could come off completely and cause a lot of damage.

Balancer install Tool

The best way to install a Harmonic Balancer is with a tool like the one in Fig. 44.7, this will make the job go smother and also will not damage the balancer. If you have a Pre-1967 crankshaft which does not have the taped hole in the end of the crankshaft it is a pretty simple job to have the crankshaft drilled and taped. One last note of caution if the Elastomer Ring is coming out from between the ring and hub don't use the harmonic balancer save your self some trouble and get a new one.
