All small blocks from 1955 through 1968 had the oil fill at the front of the intake manifold and a corresponding Boss (see Fig. 42.5a) cast at the front of the block to divert oil away from the lifter valley. For 1969 the oil fill was mover to the valve covers so the casting at the front of the block was removed as seen in Fig. 42.5b also note the small holes drilled for the front intake manifold gasket indicated by the arrows this type of gasket was started in 1969 but not all blocks untill 1971 used the different gaskets.
