Introduced in 1957 the 283-CID block was an over bored 265-CID. In 1958 a new 283-CID block with thicker cylinder walls was introduced. It can be identified by the engine mounting bosses cast into the side of the block. From 1963 to 67' when production stopped the blocks were cast with thinner cylinder walls. In 1959 the rear main seal was changed from Graphite Impregnated rope type seal to a Neoprene lip seal. In 1957 the engine was a bored out 265-CID so early 283-CID blocks will not stand boring more than 0.060-inch max. The 1958 to 1962 blocks can be bored 0.125-inch and blocks cast from 1963 to 67' with thinner cylinder walls should only be bored 0.060-inch.
